BE The Back pain specialist IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Cox® Technic & The Back Pain Specialist

Cox® Technic since the start and through its evolution under the watchful eye of Dr. James M. Cox has developed into a research-documented, research-driven, and evidence-based chiropractic technique of spinal manipulation. Dr. Cox strove to keep supporting research into flexion distraction and decompression procedures that will allow you, his colleague, to become the back pain specialist in your community.

Cox® Technic began in a chiropractic clinic with a doctor who wanted to relieve back pain in his patients. Over the years, Dr. Cox shared his enthusiasm for being a back pain specialist and presenting the protocols to researchers as well as colleagues to make sure anyone wanting to relieve back pain could also become known as the back pain specialist in his or her local community.

A back pain specialist is one who focuses on the examination and diagnosis of the patients that will guide the proper application of Cox® Technic protocols to relieve back pain. The examination of the spine is lead by the most accurate tests researchers find and document in the literature.  The diagnosis, most crucial to the best clinical outcomes, depends on the back pain specialist's keeping abreast of the latest examination tests and what they mean. The treatment plan is then based on the diagnosis. The back pain specialist doesn't shy away from the toughest 1 out of 4 patients who are 95% of healthcare cost going to back pain, but rather confidently welcomes these patients, knowing that he or she is the conservative back pain specialist in the community.

The back pain specialist who follows the Cox® Technic system of protocols can rely on the published protocols in textbooks and peer-reviewed and other journals. The protocols call for the doctor to know if the patient is a Protocol I or Protocol II type patient then apply the technique properly for the best back pain relief clinical outcomes like those published are already established for the back pain specialist to rely on as the treatment plan develops.

Hands-on Workshops are "OPPORTUNITIES TO BOLSTER YOUR REPUTATION AS THE SPINE DOCTOR - THE BACK PAIN SPECIALIST - IN YOUR COMMUNITY," according to Dr. Cox.

WATCH Dr. Cox share how he viewed Cox® Technic Hands-on Workshops as mini-residencies with experienced Cox® Technic certified colleagues.

Take advantage of one soon! Hands-on workshops for chiropractic technique are vital to the proper application of Cox® Technic protocols for optimal clinical outcomes.

Cox® Technic Hands-On Workshops are lead by Certified Cox® Technic Instructors in their private clinics.

Limited to 2 to 6 participants at a time, they give participants the opportunity to take turns being the "patient" and the "doctor" to experience the proper feel the patient should experience and to be directed in the proper application as the doctor. Proper application of the published, research-tested and documented technique protocols raises the doctor's opportunity for optimal clinical outcomes and to work smarter not harder in applying flexion distraction procedures.

These are 'Hands-On' Workshops, not just observation! These workshops do not focus on patient management or office procedures, they focus on application. Some attendees come as their first introduction to the technique while others come after newly being certified or after years-and-years of being certified to re-hone their skills in a small group environment with kind, patient, experienced colleagues.

CERTIFICATION

Transform Your Practice with Cox® Technic

Background/Mission of the Cox® Certification Courses

63.7% of chiropractic physicians reported that they practice Cox® Technic according to the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners in 2010. This statistic makes it one of the most popular techniques in chiropractic, one of only four in chiropractic that a majority of chiropractic physicians practice. However, only a few are certified, about 3.4% of 49,100 (by Bureau of Labor Statistics 2008) to 2.3% of 70,000 (by National Board of Chiropractic Examiners 2010 report).

To help physicians be more competent in their practices and patients be more confident in their choices of physicians to visit, the Cox® Certification Program was established in 1991 at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard (Chicago), Illinois, with Dr. James M. Cox. Chiropractic physicians (and students) may choose to take the certification examination. If passed, they are "Certified".

Certification in  Cox® Technic Flexion Distraction and Decompression protocols:

  • Establishes that Cox® certified physicians practice similarly.
  • Allows patients to expect similar treatment from Cox® certified doctors, should they be away from home and need care.
  • Shows that Cox® certified physicians are committed to providing the best care using the most current research data and information.
  • Allows the expectation that certified doctors keep in touch with the latest findings by keeping their education and experience current via post-graduate courses or via private study of the latest research and demonstrate their understanding of such via a patient case report publishing.
  • May also be acquired for Cervical Spine and Thoracic Spine in addition to Lumbar Spine.
  • To be listed in the referral directory, you must have the LUMBAR SPINE certification completed.
  • Cervical Spine Certification - 14 hours plus written/practical exam
  • Thoracic Spine Certification - 14 hours plus written/practical exam
  • Those doctors who are already lumbar spine certified and then pass the cervical and/or thoracic certification exams (written/practical) are indicated with a bullet point next to their names in the referral directory as being "cervical spine certified" and/or "thoracic spine certified".

Benefits of Certification

  • Confidence in caring for the severe and routine low back patients. Don’t fear the antalgic sciatic or radicular patient.
  • Inclusion in the Cox® Technic on-line Referral Directory
  • Opportunity to have a personalized page for you and your practice on this website - example / Premium Referral Directory Listing
  • Prestige of public and professional positioning as the low back doctor or spine physician of choice
  • Formal Certificate of Certification from NUHS Post Grad
  • Refer with confidence to fellow physicians who treat similarly to you.
  • 15% discount on future seminars with Cox® Technic!

Students in Chiropractic School Wanting to be Certified

Students from schools where a Cox® Technic course is taught by an Active Cox® Certified physician may be exempt from taking Part I -- if they take the Part II course within 2 years from graduation - although taking Part I is highly encouraged.

TIME BETWEEN LUMBAR PARTS I and II:

Part II must be taken within 2 years of taking Part I (or from graduation if a student per the above description).

Part I — What Is Cox® Technic? The Basics
This dynamic, fast-paced 15 hours weekend is the first step to incorporating the System of Cox® Technic into your spine pain management practice. It is based on the biomechanical and anatomical published spinal literature as well as the experimental laboratory studies’ findings on Cox® Technic itself. The System of Cox® Technic uses this biomechanical and anatomical understanding as a bridge to the interpretation of the clinical examination and imaging findings to come up with a clear diagnosis of the patient’s spine pain source and condition. From this, a clear treatment plan is set forth, a treatment plan based on evidence and science. The conditions focused on at Part I on the non-discogenic conditions like facet syndrome, spondylolisthesis, tropism, short leg and the like with some sharing of care for scoliosis, lumbago, thoracic spine tightness, and spinal stenosis.Hands-on protocols are introduced, demonstrated, and practiced for lumbar spine in small groups while videotaped actual clinical patients’ examination, treatment, even education, from Dr. Cox’s office are shared.

  • Part I introduces The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management as it focuses on non-discogenic low back pain conditions along with a bit of discogenic and stenotic and the Cox® Technic flexion distraction and decompression hands-on protocols.
  • Part I shares the history and evolution of the science and research behind the protocols and features small group sessions lead by experienced chiropractic instructors that focus on the application of the protocols.
  • Lead by experienced, certified-in-Cox®-Technic chiropractic hands-on instructors who practice this technique every day, this weekend will excite you for Monday morning!
  • Read what attendees say about the courses (below)!

ATTENDEE FEEDBACK

Part II Cox® Certification Course - How Is Cox® Technic Applied and Integrated into a Clinical Practice
This energetic weekend course builds on the foundation started in Part I. The biomechanical and anatomical influences on spinal pain are reviewed. The clinical examination is re-emphasized as its importance in the care and ultimate clinical outcome of spinal pain patients is paramount. The treatment plan is demonstrated in videotaped clinical cases. The treatment protocol from tolerance testing to administration based on the research-documented and published algorithms is demonstrated, practiced, finetuned during the objective pressure-transducer session for each attendee, and graded during the practical exam. Tips for educating patients in home care and pain prevention as well as principled ways to spread the word about your gentle, evidence-based care are included.

The conditions focused on in Part II are discogenic-related like disc herniation, spinal stenosis, radiculopathy and the like with presentations on treating post-surgical continued pain patient,  pregnancy-related back and/or leg pain, and more.

Hands-on protocols for lumbar spine are practiced in small groups. Protocol I and II and side-lying techniques are shared.

Part I introduced the academics of Cox® Technic more for the non-discogenic spinal pain conditions as well as the hands-on protocols.

Part II makes sure that the hands-on application is proper with hands-on training emphasis. Small groups lead by experienced, certified-in-Cox®-Technic chiropractic instructors focus on the application of the protocols. The certification examination is offered optionally.

Part II continues the presentation of The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management as it focuses on discogenic low back pain at Part II. Cox® Technic is a system of spinal pain management. The technique doesn’t stand alone in the relief of spine pain, but rather is a central component. The patient, home care, Cox® Technic, exercise, examination, doctor skill are all part of the system whose goal is pain relief. The didactic discussion of spine pain conditions highlights disc-related conditions and spinal stenosis. Part II small group hands-on sessions ensure proper protocol application. Attendees practice with the force-measuring Cox®8 Force Table by Haven Medical that provides real-time feedback regarding the pressure being applied to the spine throughout the delivery of Cox® Technic protocols. This translates the biomechanics research findings of Gudavalli et al into clinical, practical application for patient back pain and leg pain relief. It's evidence-based practice care at its best highlighting the nearly 60+ years of effort to document chiropractic care outcomes fostered by Cox® Technic's developer, Dr. James Cox. The first federally funded study by the US government for chiropractic research when Dr. Ram Gudavalli joined Dr. Cox, the research abilities really started to be interdisciplinary and more complex. You will see and experience how. This course is a mix of the research and clinical application for attendee implementation into current practice. The lumbar certification examination is offered optionally.

 ATTENDEE COMMENTS

"I found the seminar to be a perfect blend of intellectual knowledge and hands on practical information. Before part 2, I was getting fairly good results with the instrument and wondered if it was really worth going to part 2. You know, the technique does seem fairly simple. Once there, Dr Gudavalli measured my force with his instrument and found I was using half the force suggested. I spent four different sessions with him trying to perfect this. Then Dr. Cox improved my cervical technique dramatically at one of the lunch hours. I have noticed impressive patient improvements in the week since the seminar...So looking forward to part 3 now." Warmly, Mark  [Dr. Mark B. Frank (email correspondence]
"I had a great experience at the course this weekend and feel that the time and money I spent for the course well worth it. Dr. Cox’s energy is amazing and his passion for chiropractic is contagious.  I am back at the office today explaining to the medical residents shadowing me what it is I am doing when performing Cox® Technique, confident with the training I have received this weekend that I will give a clear understanding of how and why we treat back and neck problems.  Those who have seen me perform treatment are impressed with the gentleness of the approach and immediate positive patient response.  Thanks again to Dr. Cox for his tireless effort in making this a reality for the profession." - George Simmons, DC

Chiropractic physicians are invited to join this weekend of Thoracic Spine care with the Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management via various presentations: description of thoracic spine related conditions (exam/diagnosis/biomechanical tips), demonstration of treatments and protocols, and hands-on practice of treatment protocols and appropriate exercises.
The interconnection of the vagus nerve, the autonomic nervous system, the celiac plexus, and the spine will be explored with references, treatment demonstrations, and hands-on practice with The Cox®8 (Force) Table.
Finally, correlative spine manipulation and mobilization is a goal of this seminar, i.e., how does each spine area affect the full spine and how can chiropractic distraction spine manipulation contribute to the biomechanical correction for pain relief and disability reduction (of conditions like DISH, thoracic disc herniation, hyperkyphosis, upper thoracic syndrome, compression fracture, scoliosis, etc.)?
An emphasis of hands-on demo and practice with a foundation of spine literature references forms this new weekend syllabus sure to re-inspire your care of patients with thoracic-related issues that you may not even realize!
